The Challenge of 2020
At the conclusion of 2020, the Washington Spirit sales office commissioned an art piece to capture the emotions of an NWSL season conducted in the challenging environment of the COVID-19 pandemic. The club solicited the fans for words and phrases that describe their high and low points during the season. They are laid across the COVID observance ribbon. I highlighted the locations that had strong meaning during the year—Audi Field, our home venue that never saw a match; our home city of Washington, DC which supported the team throughout; and the mountains of Salt Lake City, Utah where the team played in the NWSL Challenge Cup (the first professional sports league to return to play). The prints were given as gifts to Spirit season ticket holders who stayed invested in team during the pandemic.
